At the end of the Daxia Dynasty the vassals were divided and annexed each other. The vassal Feng Zheng took Jingzhou, where Wang Rou lived, and unified the northern forces. He then led his troops south to attack Li Rong, who had unified the southern forces, with the intention of ending the chaos. However, he was defeated by Zhao Han, a Confucian general under Li Rong, and returned to the north.
